To Sell a Product Online, Find a Problem That Needs Solving. Here’s How!

What is the best way to make money with a home-based Internet business?

While you certainly have a lot of options online, including creating an AdSense site, selling affiliate products, or being a vendor on a site such as eBay, Fiverr, or Etsy, one of the best ways to make a significant income is to develop and promote your own products. These products could either be physical or information products. Here are some tips that can help.

First, you need to decide what kind of products you will develop for your Internet business. This varies according to the individual, but you should focus on something you have a passion for. You will find it far easier to throw yourself into your work, to write about and develop a product, if you have an interest in that topic. Also, you’ll be far more likely to be able to develop a quality product.

While there are some who claim that you can develop a quality product simply by doing a little research online or at the library, the reality is that you will do far better if you start with something you already know about.

The demand for the product you are considering is also another important factor. This is where online research comes in. After all, if no one is interested in your course on basketweaving in Greenland, you may not succeed in selling a lot of copies!

It Starts with Keyword Research

You can use one of the many keyword research tools available online to find out how much of a demand there is for your product. This is also a good way, incidentally, to gauge how stiff the competition is.

Learning about keyword research is useful in another way too, as it will be needed in order to promote your product after you develop it. You will need to drive traffic to your site, and this is usually achieved through good placement in the search engines. Many sites receive around 90% of their visitors through search engine traffic.

You want to find the so-called “starving crowd” — people who eagerly want a particular product or benefit, but whose needs aren’t currently being adequately met.

Find Problems To Be Solved

Once you have determined that there is sufficient demand for your product, you will want to find out from potential customers what their biggest problems are, and work out a way to satisfy them. You can do this by participating in forums relating to your particular interest to find out what people are interested in and what needs of theirs are not currently being met.

Earlier, when you researched your niche, you used the keyword tools. You will use them again to promote the site that features your product. You will want to find the terms that people are searching for in relation to your product and develop a site around that. This is called search engine optimization (SEO).

Paid vs. Free Promotion

The alternative to this is paid advertising, such as Google AdWords. With this type of advertising, you bid on certain keywords and when people search for your niche, your ad will appear alongside Google search results (depending on how much you bid).

Should you use free or paid methods of promotion? Paid methods will be a faster way to drive traffic to your site, but the advertising costs will eat into your profits. Free methods of promotion will be much slower, but they may be more sustainable over the long term for your particular niche.

Finally, remember that, despite what some may say, you can run an Internet business just as well from a Mac as you can from a PC. Watch out for those who say you need tricky, specialized software that runs only on a particular computer platform in order to succeed online. Tablet computers like the iPad are also becoming a viable platform for running a business.

The reality is that there is no software that is a magic bullet for Internet marketing success. To succeed online, It will require effort, determination and most of all, hard work.
